Airline Fees For The Obese
As if we needed another reminder that the US is the world's most obese nation...
United Airlines has announced a new formal policy for addressing seating for overly obese passengers. Those passengers that are not able to lower their armrest, will be forced to pay for another seat or to upgrade to a larger seat in business or first class. If neither of these options is available, said passengers will be "discretely" asked to transfer to a later flight where this option is available.
This new policy has come after United has received over 700 complaints last year. On the one hand, this is understandable, since this situation would affect people sitting next to said passengers. However, on the other hand it seems the policy is a bit excessive and could be very embarrassing for an overly obese passenger.
