Luggage racks are a type of storage unit used to keep bags secure and in position, whether it is a container that is put on top of a vehicle or a small stand that goes inside a hotel room. When used in a home or hotel room, luggage racks provide a surface on which to rest suitcases, specifically during packing and unpacking, so they do not have to be placed directly on the floor. The base of models are made from various materials including wood, chrome and steel, while the support straps are typically a sturdy canvas or nylon. Devices that go on the roof must be sturdy enough to stand up to high winds and inclement weather conditions, yet lightweight enough to prevent damage to the vehicle. The frame will be metal or stainless steel with a type of protective barrier to ward off scratches. Nylon straps or netting are used to keep both the suitcases and the rack in place.
