No, the Lingo Xplorer 52 Talking 52 Language Translator is not voice activated. One must type in what they would like to translate, and the translator will say the translation out load. -

Can I type in my own phrase or sentence not from the travel phrases and it be spoken aloud?
Yes, the translator will allow you to type in your own word(s) or phrase(s) that are not provided in their selection to be spoken aloud. -

If I speak a question will it translate aloud to the other person?
This translator will speak aloud to the other person, but the word(s) or phrase(s) will be input into the translator by text/keys on the translator and not by talking into it. -
