Pan Am started out in 1927 as a small airline servicing just the Havana and Key West areas. However, it soon transitioned into a global powerhouse in the world of air travel, thanks, in large part, to the stewardesses, who looked like models. With their Edith Head designed uniforms and chic Pan Am cabin bags, the airline quickly earned a reputation as the most stylish airline in the world. Now, that idealistic world is coming back into the public’s consciousness, thanks to the new TV show Pan Am, on ABC. It has sparked a resurgence in the demand for elegant luggage with a retro twist.
Just like the airline itself, the new Pan Am bags are a symbol of quality and integrity, with a touch of cool. These bags have an unfailing shape and style, making them classic pieces that will stand the test of time. While there are a few different Pan Am Brands collections, they all maintain a very structured appearance with clean lines and geometric shapes.
The traditional Pan Am colors are a distinct shade of blue, referred to as Pan Am blue, mixed with white. While most of the bags are available in this combination, there are also some new color choices like flight blue, black, vintage white, olive and silver, all of which are also mixed with white. Beyond the appearance, these bags have quality touches like smooth YKK zippers and brushed nickel hardware.
The Pan Am Originals Collection is a tribute to the actual bags that were carried during the airline’s peak. The iconic Pan Am logo is proudly and boldly displayed on the center of the bags. The luggage in the Originals Collection features a printed cotton/nylon lining and an outer PU shell.
For those consumers who prefer more subdued and subtle bags, there is the Signature Collection. Available exclusively in a rich, black jacquard material, with a black satin lined interior, the Pan Am logo is still present, yet more refined, in a silver brushed nickel. Accents like fine Italian leather trim give pieces a sleek and expensive look.
The most modern and fashion-forward designed collection is the Globe Print. The classic Pan Am logo, minus the name, is transformed into a fun, funky pattern that is spread all-over the bag. The final effect is a combination of heritage styling and contemporary motifs.
For two bags in one there is the PAA Reversibles Collection, which is boldly printed with original, vintage advertisements, luggage tags and art from earlier years. In place of the traditional Pan Am logo, this collection displays the PAA letters in large text, resembling a monogram. Antique gold wing zipper pulls and hardware add to the retro effect.
